Agroecology and the Labour Movement

A day of discussion and political education organised by the Food and Work Network, with support from the Experimental Humanities Collaborative Network (EHCN) at Birkbeck, University of London

Saturday 11 May, 11:00-17:00, Organiclea Workers’ Cooperative, 115 Hawkwood Crescent, Chingford, E4 7UH.

This one-day workshop will be held at the urban farming cooperative Organiclea in London's Lea Valley. It aims to engage in action-oriented discussion on how food workers can connect to agroecological cooperatives like Organiclea across the food chain.

The tensions between industrial and agroecological food production models play out in political debates between degrowth and productivist accounts of socialism.

Can we meet our everyday food needs through urban farming?

Can supermarkets and other food and retailers be socialised?

What role can workers’ and consumer cooperatives play in bolstering the right to food?

These and other questions will be addressed through a combination of participatory discussion sessions involving food workers and cooperative members - facilitated by academic experts and food justice organisers - and an on-site tour and explanation of how Organiclea operates as a cooperative.

Please email a.colas@bbk.ac.uk if you wish to attend the workshop – some limited funding is available to support travel costs.
